Letter: A fun way of celebrating Earth Day

To the editor:

The wind turbines are the latest and most visible sign of the greening of Gloucester.

But for years, in ways large and small, local businesses have been taking steps to reduce their impact on the environment.

The Cape Ann TimeBank has created a playful way to highlight what eight of these businesses are doing. It’s called Eco-Trip Gloucester.

Eco-Trip Gloucester is a downtown scavenger hunt. People can play solo or in teams of 2 to 4. First, you register at www.capeanntimebank.org. The cost is $10/person ($15 after April 13). Then, on Saturday, April 20, at 12:30, you sign in at the Friend Room of the Sawyer Library, pick up a map, and choose a route to walk to the eight businesses.

At each business, you receive a puzzle – a maze, word search, crossword, etc. The solution to the puzzle reveals that business’ green feature. Cool, huh? Once you solve all the puzzles, you join your fellow travelers at Latitude 43 by 3 p.m. for free snacks and a prize drawing.

I picture this as a festive, community-building day. Animated groups of people in high spirits pass one another as they roam from business to business, recognizing each other by the Eco-Trip tags they are wearing.

You might hear, “Have you gone to Mill River Consulting yet? Their puzzle is really fun.” Or you might hear, “I never knew that I could get my shoes repaired at Nor’east Cleaners!”

We are excited about and grateful to these cutting edge businesses for stepping up to be part of the first Gloucester Eco-Trip: Harbor Health Group, Dogtown Books, Jim’s Bagel & Bake Shoppe, Mill River Consulting, Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Nor’east Cleaners, Latitude 43, Cape Ann Farmers’ Market.

The Eco-Trip has arisen out of our love for Gloucester and our hope for its future. As a community, we will be forced to meet our needs from energy sources other than fossil fuels. The Cape Ann TimeBank is contributing to this shift, creating a network of people who strengthen our community by offering services both to each other and to local groups. The TimeBank is based on the core value that everyone has something to offer.

We love this place. Come play with us!
