Letter: School remains best option for Fuller

To the editor:

Give me a break!

I just read the article regarding the bus drivers at Fuller School (the Times, Wednesday, Dec. 19).

Gloucester city officials never cease to amaze me.

My first question is: has anyone called the labor board? Doesn’t turning off the heat and water in an indoor office create a substandard working condition? How long has the city been considering this move? That would sum up how long they had to move the transportation department.

There’s a quote in the article from a city administrator who basically says they only have to walk 350 feet to the nearest bathroom. How many other city employees have to walk this far to use a bathroom or wash their hands?

Do you want to know what to do with the Fuller School? Reopen it.

There isn’t an inch of that building that’s wasted space. It makes me sick how much money this city has wasted for the past 39 years heating the common area at the O’Maley School. And why are we doing it? Because O’Maley School has a rink; a rink that has barely broken even for 39 years.

We need a central space for the Fire Department and Police Department. House them both at O’Maley and keep the rink open.

It’s too bad we didn’t allow the charter school to use the Fuller School. They would have renovated it, we would have collected rent, and now that the school is closing, we would have a functional building.

Why is it, if it’s a bad idea, our city officials usually choose it? And if it’s a good idea, our officials don’t want to have anything to do with it?
