Letter: Limiting gun availability saves lives

To the editor:

At the heart of disagreements between liberals and conservatives is their preference for cooperative versus individual action.

Gun control is a case in point.

Conservatives like the idea of individuals using guns to protect themselves. Liberals prefer to have their government keep handguns and automatic weapons out of the hands of the public, and to rely on the police for protection.

There is no question about which approach keeps people safer. The number of shooting deaths in the U.S., where guns are freely available, is far higher than in countries where they are not. Gun control opponents like to portray the use of guns to defend against criminals, whereas in fact the great majority of homicides are between family members and “friends.”

Clearly, people are less likely to be shot when they cooperate to limit access to handguns and automatic weapons. Cooperative action to control their availability could save thousands of American lives each year.

Let’s insist on it!
