Wednesday night, I went to the first performance of “Julius Caesar” put on by CAST (Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe) at the Gloucester Stage Company’s Gorton Theatre.
It was an exhilarating experience coming from a cold wet evening to the giddy language of Shakespeare, studded with familiar phrases, in this well-directed play, set in ancient Rome, but with its political machinations all too relevant to us today.
There are many pleasures in the acting: among them the thoughtfulness of Brutus, the insinuations of Cassius, the persuasiveness of Mark Antony in his famous speech to the populace: “Friends, Romans, Countrymen: Lend me your ears!” (mangled in the 1950s film by Marlon Brando, but fresh and convincing here).
This play will only be performed this weekend: the remaining performances are tonight and Saturday nights at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3. So all I can say is, get over to East Gloucester (Gorton Theatre, 267 East Main St.) and see it while you can.
