Spending, not revenue, is sinking us all|Letter: Spending, not revenue, sinking us all

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — To the editor:

“I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” — Thomas Jefferson

Past generations made great sacrifices so the next generation would have a better life. But we no longer have a government that works for us, we work for the government.

We have city property taxes, each bill higher than the one before, excise taxes, water and sewer bills, city trash bags, school bus passes, and many other fees that are basically a tax.

We have state income tax, sales tax 6.25 percent, gasoline tax 40 cents per gallon between state and federal, lottery tickets, cigarette tax, many more hidden fees.

We have out-of-control spending and corruption in the State House, yet the governor has the audacity to ask for a tax hike.

Federal government is worst of all; it is a total disgrace. It is completely immoral to leave the next generation with so much debt, that they can’t possibly pay. But revenue isn’t the problem. Can we really afford to pay any more taxes?

Spending, waste and corruption are the real problem. Facts are stubborn things.

How do we stop it? I say we stop paying for it.
