Letter: Time to curb government's insatiable appetite

To the editor:

Am I alone in becoming more and more scared that greedy government’s insatiable appetite can never consume enough of our money or our assets?

Recently, Cyprus defeated a bill to garnish savings accounts. (They call it a tax, as if that makes it right and proper.)

People who spent everything they have, like the government, would not be affected by this confiscation, only those who, unlike the government, live within their means.

People who borrow to spend more than they make, like the government, would not be affected by this confiscation, only those who, unlike the government, don’t live in the dream world of deficit spending and save to ensure they can afford later what they cannot have today.

Our death tax, the inheritance tax, is the same concept. Spend all, leave your children nothing except debt and everyone goes scot-free. (For those easily offended, the term has no reference to our friends, the Scots, but comes from the Old English “Sceot,” meaning tax.) However, if you don’t buy the new car every year, if you live modestly and within your means, you are not allowed to give what remains to those you leave behind in death.

California gave a tax-break to encourage business and entrepreneurs to create jobs for you and me. They now think it isn’t a good idea to help job creators create jobs — California should be allowed to make whatever mistakes they wish.

But their audacity is to repeal the tax retroactively, so all who gambled on the Californian economy are punished and subject to additional fines for late payment of taxes unknown, going back five years to 2008. You recall one of the first taxes the Clinton’s pushed through when they assumed power in 1993 was a retroactive tax increase.

Am I alone in becoming more and more scared that greedy government’s insatiable appetite can never consume enough of our money or our assets?
