Letter: Essex police super at handling egg hunt crisis

To the editor:

I wanted to let the public know how wonderfully Chief Silva and his police force handled the explosive threat just prior to the Essex town Easter Egg Hunt last weekend.

A few families and I had placed 2,700 eggs in the fields behind town hall on Saturday morning between 8 and 8:30 a.m. After the others left, I remained with my husband and son to watch over the field and to finish the decorations. It was at that time I noticed the police and Fire Department moving trucks and setting up cones to keep people back from the station. Chief Silva noticed me at the field and came down to explain the situation.

When he found out that the hunt was for the whole town, he quickly asked if I could gather parents and children elsewhere (we had planned to gather right on the field) until the situation was under control. He had police officers help me lead parents up the hill around town hall to the library.

His calm demeanor and his forces made it very easy to congregate the families at an alternate location. When all was said and done we still had four minutes to spare until the start of the hunt.

Chief Silva and his crew, even under extremely stressful circumstances, helped this event go on without panic or any ill effects to those participating.

The children gathered the 2,700 eggs in 11 minutes and enjoyed face painting and bubbles as well.

Our event was a success due to the amazing efforts of Essex police and fire and I will be forever grateful to them.
