Letter: Ready for some Salem State U. football?

To the editor:

I’m thinking of what it would mean for the ever-growing Salem State University adding football to their athletic curriculum, probably in a Division III status.

I could see Salem State University playing Saturday afternoons at Bertram Field, where Salem High plays Friday night football.

A Salem State University Division III football team would be competitive with a lot of football players to pick from the North Shore/New Hampshire line down to Cape Cod. A number of Division III football players make the National Football League because of the good professional scouting in the modern era.

To get a football program started at Salem State University, I think it would be wise to get two longtime retired high school football coaches, Salem’s Ken Perrone and Peabody’s Ed Nizwantowski, with their wealth of football knowledge, to get a program off the ground, then maybe hire a Massachusetts Division I high school football coach in his early or mid-30s to be the first Salem State University football coach.

A football program at Salem State University would mean a lot to Salem and the area.
