Letter: Awareness and the mayor's office

To the editor:

Since most people nowadays, I would guess, think of “retarded” in the word’s offensive sense, Mr. Bell’s use of the word suggests a lack of awareness/sensitivity to those who have suffered from its “slings and arrows.”

Because of its abusive history, the word is no longer used in medical, educational, and regulatory practices.

As mayor of a city, one needs to think in terms of all citizens, not just those with whom one is familiar.
