Gloucester Daily Times
---- — To the editor:
In 2004, our then-10-year-old, Michael, wrote to our senator and our representative at the State House to have sidewalks installed from Concord Street down Essex Avenue toward the Essex line because he didn’t feel safe riding his bicycle to and from West Parish School.
The Gloucester Times wrote an article about the little boy who asked for change and everyone jumped on the bandwagon about this heart-warming story.
As happens all too often, once the moment lapsed, the proposal for sidewalks faded into the past. Nine years and four Ward 5 councilors later, it took the effort and follow-through of Greg Verga to finally see the project through.
Although the sidewalks are not yet completed, the progress is substantial and the students are safer now thanks to Greg’s determination.
We’ll miss Greg as our Ward 5 representative on the City Council but at least we know that he will make a fine councilor at large and will serve the entire city. Our grateful thanks go out to Greg Verga.
