Letter: Bell is the CEO Gloucester needs

To the editor:

I am voting for Mac Bell because exclusion and apathy, and the pursuit of longevity over service are what create situations like the debacle in Washington.

When “We the People” are no longer part of the equation, it’s time to take control over who we have hired to lead.

Kirk has been mayor for six years and is vying for her next two-year seat. She needs the job, the car and the power of office in a way that shuts out the voting citizens of Gloucester absolutely. Her “my way or the highway” leadership has resulted in crumbling assets, rising taxes and lost emergency services to stash cash for whom?

I have known Mac for a long time, having worked for him at The Glass Sailboat while in college. Mac respected my big mouthed idealism and taught me to look beyond my own perspective when appreciating other people, even when they were difficult.

He earned their respect and mine because he is from tough, hard-working stock. Mac’s grandfather, like many of ours, came to Gloucester to work the waterfront. Vision, quality, and hard work built Mighty Mac. And vision, quality and hard work have built Mac’s retail and real estate businesses.

Mac does not need the job, the car or the headache. But he signed on in the name of protecting democracy and preserving the future of the town his family has inhabited for over 100 years. His success as mayor will be the result not of big bucks, but big ideas.
