Letter: Questions on Benghazi have already been answered

To the editor:

I am writing to thank Rev. Duda (Midweek Musings, the Times, Wednesday, June 19) for reminding me of that wonderful book “Peace is Every Step” by Thich Nhat Hanh.

In his “Going home,” with Jesus and Buddha as brothers; he wrote: “The sound of the bell in the Buddhist Temple, the sound of the bell in an Orthodox church, in a Catholic church, and in a protestant church: their nature is the same.”

So I am in a mindful moment of peace with a hot cup of coffee, and an open opinion page with the bold print: “Questions linger over Benghazi affair” (Letters, the Times, also Wednesday, June 19), I breathe in and let out, sip my coffee as I look out over the tree tops pondering how to respond.

There are no lingering questions over what happened in Benghazi. I do not have a distinct anti-Christian bias. I do have a very strong bias of theocracies as a form of government.

There is no tape of President Obama in the situation room watching the attack on live time because that never happened.

As for the myth that President Obama was MIA after the attack for eight hours, Fox News pushed selectively cropped footage of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey as evidence that President Obama was “AWOL” the night of the Benghazi attack.

In reality, Panetta and Dempsey emphasized that Obama’s involvement was appropriate and that the White House was kept “well-informed” throughout the night. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said “there was no question the president was concerned about American lives.” Panetta also testified to the fact that Obama was in contact with military officials and was “well-informed” during the attack on our consulate.

As for President Obama not putting his campaign and fund-raising on hold, the sad reality is within minutes of the first reports of demonstrations and an attack in Benghazi, Fox, the Republican Party and Mitt Romney were whipping up the incident for political gain.

In fact, President Obama owed it to the nation in this close election to continue to work on his reelection during this sad, tragic time.
