Letters/My View

To the editor:

My thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew and loved Trayvon Martin.

The racial profiling that led to Trayvon’s killing is a wakeup call to all of us living in these diverse United States.

Clearly we are not united when it comes to how we are portrayed, perceived and treated. Trayvon was portrayed as the threat while simply walking in a gated community where he belonged, and then was denied the right to protect himself after being pursued by an armed assailant.

The fact that so many white people do not understand or believe that people of color are habitually profiled, targeted and subjected to unequal social, economic, employment and justice systems indicates just how seldom we travel in one another’s shoes. If you are interested in learning how your perceptions are impacted by unconscious racial and other biases, visit and take some tests. Then take to the streets to make our voices heard that these inequities cannot stand.

Whenever one innocent person among us is killed because of the color of their skin, age, gender or dress, we are all diminished.
