Letter: Bible dangerous in hands of 'literalists'

To the editor:

Our local newspaper here in Gloucester has been having a back-and-forth, basically over whether God hates homosexuals, based in part on the city’s flying the rainbow flag.

I just re-read the chapter called Leviticus, and I cannot understand how any minister/ preacher, lay person etc. who quotes it as the true word of God spoken to Moses, then preaches that it applies to life here in Gloucester in 2013 should be taken seriously.

The Bible is a dangerous weapon in the hands of some people. In this great nation, the words of the Bible have been used to destroy native people, forcing Christianity on them or death. It was used as a weapon to support slavery and to keep Africans enslaved during pre- and post-Civil War era. And, yes, the KKK was and still is a Christian-based organization.

The Bible was used as a weapon to keep women from getting the right to vote during the Women’s Suffrage fight. Today, it is being used as a weapon that denies basic civil rights to all LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) citizens.

Right now, our religious zealots are just preaching one of the 613 laws in Leviticus, but any of the other 612 can be coming soon condemning you to hell.
