Letter: Team's class act shows city's spirit

To the editor:

In an era when, all too often, high school sports teams make the news for the wrong reasons, I would like to present the Gloucester High School hockey team making the news for the right reasons.

Last January my father, Herb Joseph, passed away. While his sudden death took us all by surprise, so did the outpouring of support from so many city residents he had known and had connections to.

My father was a lifelong Gloucester resident and Gloucester High School graduate who never missed a football or hockey game and was so proud of his Gloucester Fisherman student athletes. Those same athletes, along with their coaches, came to his wake en-masse to pay their respects.

While it may have been difficult for some of them to do this, their presence was a great comfort to our family and garnered the respect of the many people who were in attendance. In addition to that, two nights prior the hockey team made a shirt with my father’s name and the number 1 on the back and tapped it each time they scored a goal while wearing his initials on their helmets.

These unsolicited acts of kindness were the sole product of coaches and students doing the right thing, and demonstrating what my father always believed and told everyone — that Gloucester is the best place to live because of its people.

On behalf of my mother and brother, thank you all so very much.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in my father’s name can contact the Gloucester Fisherman’s Athletic Association. Visit www.gloucesterathletics.org/newell-stadium.
