Letter: Letter shows ignorance of pope's role

To the editor,

My first reaction to what I viewed as Stuart Diamond’s bigoted diatribe in his letter (”Do we really need a figurehead of pope?,” the Times, Monday, March 4) was one of extreme anger.

I felt it was a personal attack on me, a Roman Catholic, and imagined a vicious counter-attack, a flaw in my human nature.

My religion mandates that I love my neighbor and pray for him. We are all blessed with free will. We can choose truth and good or we can choose evil and hate. I pray that a majority of people choose truth and good.

The reference to “Rabbi” in his letter rekindled in me the fact that Jesus was a Jew, and I consider Jews my elder brothers and sisters in the faith.

I hope that all peoples, particularly Catholics, take Mr. Diamond’s letter in the context of ignorance of other people’s religions and accept it as personal opinion that doesn’t engender hate but love.
