Letter: Hotel approval will move city forward

To the editor:

This is an open letter to our city councilors:

I’m not sure whether I can be in attendance tonight for the public hearing, but I wanted very much to reiterate my support for the Beauport/Birdseye hotel project and urge you to vote affirmatively to move Gloucester forward.

I’ve written before so I’ll spare you the full speech, but this project will be good for Gloucester on many levels: economic development, job creation, increased tax base, creating essential and much needed amenities to attract both tourism and business interest, much needed improvement of infrastructure etc.

There will surely be passionate objection expressed and I know that those who wish to see this project wither on the vine believe they have credible reasons for their position I disagree with their conclusion — approval of this project will not signal the “end of days.”

As with other large projects that have come to Gloucester in recent years — Gloucester Crossing and the Varian wind turbine — your due diligence is absolutely expected and required. But when the gavel goes down tonight, I trust that you will do the right thing by Gloucester and her long-term economic health and vote in favor of this project.
