Letter: Let's name the 'holiday' we're celebrating

To the editor:

This past weekend, I saw signs around town for the Holiday Fair & Tree Sale at the Beeman Memorial Elementary School.

I regret I was unable to attend, as I know it must have taken a lot of work.

However, had it been a Christmas Fair, which is, after all, the holiday in question, I might have been able to re-arrange my schedule to attend.

In the days of political correctness, we choose to offend one group in order not to offend another. I regret that, in this case, I was in the group chosen to offend — the group that cares about Christmas.

The signs advertised the sale of holiday trees, of which I also have no need. In fact, I don’t know what a holiday tree is.

Christmas is the only holiday that has a specific tree – that’s why it is called a Chrismas tree. I’ll assume the trees for sale were spruce, the most common tree type used for Christmas trees.

I don’t ever recall being invited to holiday fireworks in early July, nor a holiday eve party at the end of the year, nor to eat some holiday turkey last month. Those events might have brownies, but I’d suspect that at the holiday fair, there were Christmas cookies, varieties only made during Christmastime.

To you all, may you and your family have a merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy New Year.
