Letter: Anti-gay preaching had no place on page

To the editor:

I was really shocked Wednesday morning when reading the Gloucester Daily Times (July 3) and finding Dr. Slyman’s “Midweek Musings” column on sin on the editorial page.

Dr. Slyman, pastor of Rockport’s Pigeon Cove Chapel, has every right to preach his religious viewpoints to the members of his congregation, and the Times has every right to share his preaching with the audience of your publication — but on a religion page, if you had one, but please, not on the editorial page.

Gloucester’s population of nearly 30,000 human beings undoubtedly includes gays, lesbians, transgender and bisexual people — as does every world community. Cape Ann’s population undoubtedly includes lots of people like me who value the lives of my neighbors, no matter what their sexual orientation. And we do not need to be plied with sermons about sin on the editorial page of our newspaper.

Dr. Slyman is way off base in charging Mayor Kirk with “shaking her fist in the face of God” for flying a flag that recognizes the humanness of all of her constituents, and the Times is off base for allowing it.

Bravo to the mayor for doing so, and shame on you for choosing to subject your readers to the religious viewpoint of one very biased Cape Ann religious leader just days after you praised retiring Unitarian Universalist minister, the Rev. Wendy Fitting, for her exemplary leadership on these very issues.

The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on the DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and same-sex marriage in California moves our country forward in recognizing the humanity of all Americans.

If Pastor Slyman wants to use reverse gear to pull us back, he has that right in preaching to his congregation — but, please, not to me on your editorial page.
