Letter: Clergy right to refute pastor's 'musings'

To the editor:

We would like to express our deep gratitude to the 13 Cape Ann clergy members who spoke out so simply and directly in reply to the Midweek Musings column by Rev. Patrick Slyman (the Times, Saturday, July 6).

Their thoughtful, grounded, and affirming pastoral response was just what we needed to hear from our religious leaders here on Cape Ann.

Their letter serves as a reminder to us of our own responsibility to speak up when we hear any type of homophobic, racist intolerant, or other hurtful language whether among our friends, at work, within our own family, or in a public forum such as this.

Not only that, it provided a blueprint for doing it in a spirit of tolerance and love and a reminder that the work of building a welcoming, inclusive, and compassionate community here on Cape Ann belongs to all of us.
