Letter: Time to turn America back toward God

To the editor:

A lot of cars have bumper stickers that read, “God bless America,” and a lot of people use this expression when talking about our country.

Some of our politicians say it at the end of their speeches. God asks certain things of us and he sent Jesus to show us how to live fulfilled lives. I think the following passage from the Bible, the book of Jeremiah, should help us to understand, blessings go both ways:

“Thus says the Lord: This is what I commanded my people: “Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper. But they obeyed not, nor did they pay heed. They walked in the hardness of their evil hearts and turned their backs, not their faces, to me. From the day that your fathers left the land of Egypt even to this day, I have sent you untiringly all my servants the prophets.

“Yet they have not obeyed me nor paid heed; they have stiffened their necks and done worse than their fathers. When you speak all these words to them, they will not listen to you either; when you call to them, they will not answer you. Say to them: This is the nation that does not listen to the voice of the Lord, its God, or take correction. Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished from their speech.”

This passage was written for God’s people because they turned away from God and God wanted them back. God forgives.

America has turned its back on God. We have a president who promotes abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem cell research, contraception, sex education, class warfare, and he sidesteps the law when it pleases him. With one like this at the head of this country, we cannot expect God to bless us.

President Obama does not ask people to live virtuous lives, he panders to the basest instincts of people. The Health and Human Services contraception mandate is a very good example of this. President Obama doesn’t seem to know what morality is.

If America turns from it’s Godless ways, then perhaps God will listen to the empty words of “God bless America.”

“America, bless God” and listen to him.
