Letter: The John Krenn I knew

To the editor,

Some years ago my husband David and I developed a program for blind people who wished to experience sailing. The program was inspired by one we participate in called “Ski for Light,” which is designed to give cross-country skiers who are visually-limited the opportunity to ski with a guide. For many years David has been a guide and I a guided skier.

Our “Sail for Light” plan involved using the sail boats at Community Boating on the Charles River, engaging a small hotel, and inviting participants to spend five days in Boston learning to sail, as well as enjoying some of what Boston offers visitors.

Of course, experienced sailors were needed, patient sailors who were willing to teach and guide. This is where John Krenn stepped in, having heard about the program’s goals from my mother, Elaine Starrett, a Rockport friend of his.

John boarded an early morning train in Rockport every day for the event, traveled to the Charles Street station, and sailed all morning with a young man who was then, and still is, in love with sailing. In fact, Duane will be participating in the U S Blind National Championship Regatta in Newport in September and I will crew for him. John was one of those people who truly made a difference.

Amy Bower,
