Letter:

To the editor:

For anyone who has lived in Essex for less than, say, 20 or 25 years, Mary Ahern Mears’ obituary (the Times, Monday, April 22) this past week is required reading.

She was a woman who gave so much of herself to her community, asking nothing in return other than the best for all concerned. She touched your life in some way, whether you know it or not. Her accomplishments are overwhelming when you see them all written down.

When I was young, I proudly nominated her for the Essex Pride award. I still have the letter, and I am sure she did, too. If you knew her, you knew she was notorious for saving things. She had a list of people’s birthdays on her kitchen wall that included about everyone in Essex in those days, and she remembered them all.

Her door was always open. She sat in her tiny house on Conomo Point with the love of her life until she was almost 92 years old and looked out every day and saw the sunrise and wished for the best. If she was part of your life, you were blessed.

She was the Essex eagle. She was a woman ahead of her time. She had passion and grace, kindness and fortitude, strength and commitment.

Mary had the strong will of a bull and the dignity of an eagle. And so shall we, because that sounds like a wonderful way to live.
