To the editor,
A recent “poll” initiated by Mayor Kirk on the blog GoodMorningGloucester is asking residents to “choose” between a $65,000 temporary repair or a $20,000 removable boat ramp repair for the damaged footbridge at Good Harbor Beach.
What’s missing in the option list is the choice for a properly designed, aesthetically appropriate permanent solution. Given the importance of our beach — and the year-round attraction especially for residents — I certainly hope that its rebuild or replacement doesn’t get short shrift in the interest of thrift.
Considering the city’s “free cash” stash, I would think this is an entirely appropriate use for these funds — a long-term capital investment.
Even if we have to accept a short-term fix for this season given the late hour of action, for the long-view, please, let’s do this right.
