To the editor:
The Essex town election will take place on Monday, May 13, and the polls will be open at Memorial Fire Station from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
My campaign supporters will be helping me all day to hand out stickers for my write-in campaign at three locations, 150 feet away from the polls: near Town Hall, up Winthrop Street, and near the post office.
It is important for voters to know that simply putting a sticker on the ballot is not sufficient, they must mark the box with an “x” next to my sticker. Or, voters can choose to write in my name instead of using a sticker.
Why should voters consider me as a qualified candidate for this seat?
There has been a huge focus on Conomo Point in Essex to the detriment of the rest of the community.
My work experience has given me a great deal of experience with citizens’ advocacy. In Essex, I have connected with our senior population, business population, the clammers, our public service representatives, and one-to-one with individuals throughout our town.
All have expressed concerns that their voices are not being heard. We need to pull our community together and get people involved again. The low voter turnout at Town Meeting, except for one segment of our population that is well represented, indicates voter apathy and withdrawal. Without the input from our residents, people of all ages and with many perspectives, we will lose control of the direction our town will go in, in the years to come.
I want to be a voice for the people in my community, to represent all sectors, not just one.
As crumbling town buildings and big expenses loom over our town, and sales of precious real estate takes place at Conomo Point, we need to be vigilant about how to best spend our hard earned dollars. I think a complete financial review of our town, such as other communities around us and across Massachusetts have done with the help of the Department of Revenue, is an excellent idea: it is performed with the help of experts outside of our community and would be a planning tool in how to best use our assets and manage our liabilities in the near and long term.
