Golden Rule doesn't work, but does separation of church, state?

To the editor,

Ms. Joanne Gallo, you asked (Letter, “The flag and the Golden Rule,’ Times, Aug. 26); allow me to answer. The “Golden Rule” just doesn’t work. Should we allow a masochist to inflict pain upon others, because they enjoy having pain inflicted upon themselves? I don’t think so. The Golden Rule, should be: “What is hurtful to you, do not do to others!”

Ms . Janice Josephine Carney, you mentioned the Wall of Separation of Church and State being in the First Amendment (Letter, “Church, state and the mayoral election,” Times, Aug. 26); it’s not there — the phrase was lifted from a letter, penned by Thomas Jefferson to a Connecticut Baptist church, by the Supreme Court. The letter from President Jefferson was to assure the Baptist church that a state church would not override its worship, as there were several state churches in the original 13 states. That First Amendment insures that Congress will not impose law preventing the free exercise of any religion. Now Ms. Carney, may I be so bold, as to ask you a question? That wall of separation: Is it protecting you, or just getting in your way? Think about it, before you draw a conclusion.
