Letter: Gloucester family's memory Lane

To the editor:

I read with sadness of the death of Florence Lane last week, and it brings back memories of an oral history interview I did with her in 2003 at her Central Grammar apartment on Dale Ave.

The Lane family came to Gloucester in the early 1700s from Casco Bay, Maine. Her mother’s last name was Wheeler whose family owned a lot of property known as Wheelers Point. Her great-grandfather was Edward Lane and was in the Civil War. He died in 1908. She stated that her father was a pharmacist and owned Lanes Pharmacy on the corner of Washington Street and Pine St., where there is now a driving school.

We discussed Fitz Hugh Lane, who she claimed was a relative. He was born Nathaniel Rogers Lane which was later changed to “Fitz Hugh Lane” Her family home was on Knowlton Square and she described her grandfather planting a three-foot silver maple tree on the property. We visited the site, and the silver maple is still standing — 50 feet high.

There is a monument on Wheelers Point with an anchor on it. It was dedicated to Edward Lane. The anchor was given to her father by Harold Clancy, a well-known junk dealer in Gloucester years ago. The anchor didn’t have a wooden stock so he had someone in Lanesville carve one. Her brother’s name was added later in memory of his death caused by a fall into a crevice on Mount. MacArthur while mountain climbing.

I still have a copy of the interview DVD, and it sure brought back these and other good memories.
