---- — To the editor:
They say the number 13 is unlucky. Some would call that superstition.
Yet the list of clergy who found Rev. Patrick Slyman’s essay distasteful adds up to 13 (Letters, the Times, Saturday, July 6).
Is there safety in numbers? You decide.
If one person is accurately telling you what the Bible teaches and what Christians worldwide have believed for 2,000 years – as Pat Slyman has done — and 13 other people are, I believe, brazenly contradicting what the Bible teaches and fabricating a smoozy, cuddly, wimpy God who doesn’t even exist, then whom is it safe to believe?
Mr. Slyman loves the people of his community. We know this, because, like Jesus, he has called sin, sin, and called sinners to repentance, risking rejection and persecution for telling the truth.
I believe those unlucky 13 have defrauded the true character of God and wish to lead everyone astray from the one true and living God by not urging them to turn from sins the Bible assures us will lead to everlasting damnation.
