Keep fishermen's plight front and center

To the editor:

I read Marjorie Nesin’s piece on the plight of commercial fishing in Gloucester — or what is left of it (the Times, Page 1, Wednesday, July 31).

I’ve been trying to keep up with Attorney General Coakley, who is trying to see if NOAA can’t be budged, considering they are using ancient information and will not even deem it necessary to take another look at it.

From all I’ve read and heard, there doesn’t seem to be any type of financial assistance to these fishermen.

Why can’t the feds who “advised” Mr. Orlando to increase his permits (to the tune of $400,000 and is still responsible for payment) take back these “useless permits” when they are tying his hands and others.

Also, who is NOAA administrator John Bullard, the king of the fishing realm? Why isn’t he helping these people in any way he can? The fishermen aren’t his enemies; aren’t they the ones he should be looking out for?

It also seems that very few seem to care about the New England fishermen and their plight. Go to see “North Shore Fish” this weekend at Gloucester Stage Co., and try to learn more about this crisis. I just went up on www.change.org and hope that by signing up that at least show my support, and feel that this must be published for others who may want to help them to do something.

Thank you for writing about them, and I hope you’ll follow up and keep us in the loop.
