Letter: Birdseye should be veterans’ housing

To the editor,

The people of the Fort have had it with this whole hotel business.

Their jobs, lives and the future of their families are threatened by the hotel.

The Birdseye building should be converted into apartments for the young families of veterans just coming out of the service. Veterans are walking the streets with babies in carriages, holding the hands of their little ones.

Come on, Mayor Kirk, take better care of these people. Put them front and center, not the tourists, who come and go, walking on Main Street complaining about the prices and licking ice cream cones. I know, I waited on them back in the 1950s when I first started to work.

I grew up in Gloucester and raised a family there and they all grew up to be responsible people. For 77 years I lived in Gloucester. Now, due to illness, I live in New Hampshire with my beautiful daughter, Sheila.
