Letter: Historical evidence of Jesus

To the editor:

If the authors of all four Gospels could pose for a family picture, John would stand out like a 7-foot-tall giant. John is that different from Matthew, Mark and Luke.

We could go to any other Gospel and find nearly three times as many miracles as we’ll discover in John’s Gospel. John reports seven, but five of these appear nowhere else in the Bible.

Here are those five:

Turns water into wine. (John 2:1-12: “Jesus is still the master of creation.”)

Heals official’s son without even going to see the boy. (John 4:46-54: “Jesus isn’t limited in geography.”)

Heals crippled man on the Sabbath. (John 5:1-17: “Jesus isn’t limited by time. Some Jewish scholars say it’s wrong to treat the sick on the Sabbath.”)

Heals a man born blind. (John 9:1-41: “Jesus brings light into the world, both physical and spiritual.”)

Raises Lazarus from the dead. (John 11:17-44: “Even death is not a match for the Son of God.”)

Some people ask: “Why did no historian report the existence of Christ?” I did some research and here is what I discovered:

“There was a wise man named Jesus ... Pilate condemned him to be crucified ... His disciples didn’t abandon their loyalty to him. They reported that he appeared to them three days after his crucifixion and that he was alive.” Josephus, “Antiquities of the Jews.”

“Christ suffered the ultimate penalty at the hands of the procurator Pontius Pilate when Tiberius was emperor of Rome.” Tacitus, “Annals of Imperial Rome.”

According to Suetonius in “The Lives of the Caesars,” Christ caused the riots in Rome in 49 AD. This is probably a reference to the hostility that erupted when traditional Jews clashed with Jews who believed Christ was the promised Messiah. Claudius expelled all the Jews from Rome at that time.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
