Letter: Personal attacks mar congressional race

To the editor:

Recent local and state campaigns have gotten out of hand.

This week, I received an inflammatory and scurrilous piece of literature in the U.S. mail from Richard Tisei personally attacking Congressman John Tierney and his spouse. To me, it was downright dirty and offensive.

I know politics is a rough business, and that both parties offend. But personal attacks like this mailing are poisoning public discourse and are uncivil. So, too, is the reported mocking of American Indians by staffers and others supporting Sen. Scott Brown.

Area newspapers, the Knights of Columbus and other groups have been promoting civility in America.

We should all join in this effort and stick to the issues, no matter where we stand on issues or whom we support.
