Letter: Losing Gloucester's community culture

To the editor:

It was a sunny fall afternoon, with resplendent colors accentuated by mums here, mums there, mums everywhere.

“Look”, said my wife, while we were on an errand in Ipswich, “mums there, too”.

On the return home, we noticed still many mums, but considerably fewer throughout Essex. Until we reached Gloucester, where they made only a sporadic appearance.

Why is it that?

That, my friends, is community culture. Culture is what a community creates. It is something that holds a community together. It is something that expresses the spirit of a community.

It is either there or it ain’t. It is no use to say, we used to have a community spirit here in Gloucester. Once lost, it does not come back.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to one and all!
