Letter: Let's enforce existing gun laws first

To the editor:

Most stances by anti-gun citizens are based on their misguided understanding that the local or state police will be there to protect them.

Not true. The fact of the matter is the police are only cleanup crews after incidents, and have no constitutional obligation to protect the citizenry.

On June 27, 2005, in Washington, the Supreme Court ruled that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm. Police have no legal duty to respond to and prevent crime or to protect the victim. There have been over 10 various Supreme and state court cases that the individual has never won. Those who doubt this fact, go to www.scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=14114303895695899664&hl=en&as_sdt=2&as_vis=1&oi=scholarr.

Taking this fact into consideration, the emotional cries to pass more laws in the hopes to stop the violence only makes the law-abiding citizen more at risk of violence.

I would leave everything as is. Don’t you don’t understand that there are so many federal and state laws on the books now that would cripple a legal gun owner’s ability to use and even possess a firearm?

We just need to responsibly petition our legislators — and most importantly, our district attorneys — to crack down on the illegal possession and use of firearms and use those laws already on the books to put those who use a firearm illegally away for a long, long time. Leave the good guys alone.

Do you know that 2.8 million U.S. citizens use a firearm to protect themselves and family as well as neighbors every year? That’s according to FBI statistics.

If we are not careful, we could put many citizens at the mercy of the bad guys.

Let’s be smart and come from a place that puts the bad guys in fear of the law, as well as in fear of the law-abiding citizen.
