Time to refocus the debate in abortion

To the editor:

On Jan. 22, 1973, the two most destructive and divisive decisions of the United States Supreme Court were imposed on our nation: Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton. These decisions legalized abortion throughout pregnancy.

In the 40 years since, more than 50 million babies have been brutally killed and many Americans prefer not to speak out in their defense. That is a situation that is difficult to understand when most Americans believe it is an illegal act to end the life of a defenseless person and a heinous act if the defenseless person is an infant or small child. I understand that not everyone shares this view.

Unfortunately, the abortion debate has focused on arguing about the exact time when a growing fetus becomes a human being — an endless debate. I believe we can agree that an abortion ends the development process that results in an human being.

It is time to refocus our energy to providing support to expectant mothers that help them and their babies have lives together or separate lives through the generous gift of adoption.

We are fortunate to have several groups in the area that provide pregnancy support services. They will appreciate your time and financial support.

Together we can make a difference that will truly last a lifetime.
