Letter: Standing up for a woman's right to choose

To the editor:

In response to the letters regarding Roe vs. Wade I’ve been reading lately, I think all of you have overlooked a few things.

First, banning abortion is not going to make women stop getting abortions any more than banning guns will stop people from getting their hands on them. I’m not sure if you have checked all your facts, but before Roe vs. Wade there were as many as 1.2 million abortions being performed per year and many women died as a result of lack of sanitation.

Also, abortion was legal and was performed in many societies for thousands of years before it was made illegal in the United Sates in the mid- to late-1800s, and before it was made illegal, it was a fairly common procedure done by the early settlers.

Can I also point out that many of the people who are against abortion will never become pregnant? For example: men.

If I read another letter written by a man in regard to what I should be doing with my body, I think I might throw up. No male has any place regulating what I can and cannot do with my body. Control over one’s own body is a basic freedom which should under no circumstances be taken away.

A fetus is not a human being, plain and simple. It is not a human any more than an egg is not a chicken, and an acorn is not a tree. A fetus is part of the woman carrying it, it lives through the placenta and umbilical cord; it is not its own entity. The majority of abortions are done in the first trimester when a fetus has no potential to even live outside of the mother in the first place.

How about the age-old argument about rape and incest victims? Should a rape victim be forced to carry around and provide for something that will constantly remind her of something tragic that has happened? How well do you think that child will grow up? What is the mother going to say when he or she asks about his or her father?

As for the religious argument, all that really needs to be said is that religion has no place in politics. What you believe does not matter as far as how my rights are governed. It’s really as simple as that.

With all of this said, I am not “pro abortion,” I am pro choice. It is a woman’s choice to do whatever she feels is best with her pregnancy.

I applaud mothers who, despite all obstacles, choose to raise a child. I know many young mothers and I can say that they are some of the strongest women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

My mother was a young mom and I can’t think of anyone who would have done a better job caring for and loving me.

Every day, I am thankful that I was given such a wonderful woman in my life who has taught me so much. One of her best lessons was teaching me when to stand up for my rights, and right now that is exactly what I am doing.
