Letter: Why the double standards on abortion?

To the editor:

On Jan. 25, 2013, about 500,000 people from all over the U.S., including some from Cape Ann, marched in our nation’s capital in support of life from conception to death.

There was a virtual blackout of this event by all the major media outlets save one, EWTN. However, just a few days later, almost every outlet covered the approximately 1,000 people that gathered in support for gun control. Was the first not worthy of coverage? 500,000 versus 1,000? Why?

Here’s another question for you. Why is it that if a pregnant woman and her baby are killed by a drunk driver, that driver can be charged under our laws for two vehicular homicides? However, if a pregnant woman decides to procure an abortion of her own baby, that is OK? What is the difference? Is it because one child is valued and wanted and the other is not? Is that just? Is it logical?

I hear many times the mistaken belief that it is the woman’s body and she has the right to do with it as she pleases. How can that be?

While the babe in the womb draws nourishment from his/her mother, he/she has their own beating heart at 4 weeks, a unique circulation system, and distinct DNA. Doesn’t that make it a separate being? That babe in the womb is not the same as the mother’s hand or foot or kidney. It is a distinct human being with potential. Listen to a young married couple proclaim happily that they are going to have a baby. They know what is growing in the mother’s womb; it’s a baby. Logic, reason, and medical science say so.

When mothers choose abortion rather than carry their babies to term, is it because they believe this is an inconvenience? Or are they scared, alone, poor, with no support, and see no other way out of this crisis?
