Letter: Semi-automatic gun issues far from new

To the editor:

I suppose the anti-gun crowd figures that what they lack in the ability to reason constructively can be made up by endlessly pushing their ineffective and worn-out nonsense.

Some time ago, I did a little repair work for an old-timer on his old Remington Model 8 semi-auto rifle, chambered in .35 Remington.

The .35 Remington, along with three smaller caliber cartridges, was crafted in 1906 to be chambered in John Browning’s new Model 8 rifle. Early on, the Model 8’s were classified as being automatic, but as the use of true automatic weapons, or machines guns, became more common, the Model 8’s nomenclature was changed to semi-auto because of its capability of firing only one round with every trigger pull, rather than many as with a full automatic.

In 1906 guns were made of blued steel and oiled walnut. Today many modern firearms are made largely of coated aluminum and black plastic, but their function has basically not changed. Erroneously called assault weapons by some, apparently wishing to spread misinformation, these modern semi-automatic or self-loading firearms, in essence, have been around for more than a century and so there’s really not much of anything new under the sun.
