Letters: Gun reforms more practical than guards

To the editor:

Regarding the proposal to put armed guards in Gloucester’s school; does one group of children deserve more protection than another?

There are about 130,000 public and private schools in America. Assigning two armed guards, plus replacements, to each of them would require creating, training, administering, and paying a new armed force larger than the U.S. Marine Corps. I’m sure gun companies would love that, but taxpayers might find it burdensome.

I hope the people who cared enough to sign the petition to arm our schools will also take the trouble to write and call our state and national representatives. Please urge them to limit magazine size, close gun show loopholes, and institute universal background checks.

Our children deserve at least that much.
