Gloucester Daily Times
---- — To the editor:
I’m writing to encourage other residents of downtown Gloucester to re-elect Melissa Cox as our Ward 2 city councilor.
In the 15 years I’ve reported on politics, volunteered on campaigns and served as a city volunteer, I’ve never seen a city councilor work as hard as Melissa Cox.
After neighbors started the Burnham’s Field Community Garden, Melissa didn’t just show up at the ribbon-cutting or attend a couple meetings. She joined the garden, accepted a seat on the board and became the treasurer.
When a noisy new air conditioning system at the post office kept Dale Avenue and Pleasant Street residents awake, Councilor Cox worked with city, state and even federal officials to get a new air conditioning system installed that was quieter and let neighbors sleep at night.
When neighbors, the city’s Open Space and Recreation Committee and Community Development landed a grant to renovate Burnham’s Field, Councilor Cox volunteered to help, organized a series of public meetings, and joined the steering committee to hammer out the boring but important details.
When residents of Allen Street noticed a street sign had been knocked over, Councilor Cox worked with the DPW to have it replaced.
Little things like these mean a lot to the neighbors and their kids who live there and play on the street every day.
Councilor Cox is smart, hard-working and accessible. She’s a strong advocate for Ward 2 residents and she has my vote.
