'This Old House' contractor loves Rockport restaurant
Contractor Tom Silva has been bringing new life to old houses with his carpenter genius (and infinite supply of obscure tools and technology) on the PBS program "This Old House" for 22 years. But he's no stranher to Cape Ann, and talks about some of his favorite places to eat.

Heavenly hamburgers
It is estimated that 13 billion hamburgers are consumed every year. Who invented the hamburger sandwich? The legend is that Louis' Lunch in New Haven Connecticut is where the hamburger sandwich was created in 1895. The story goes that Louis Lassen, the proprietor, was grinding some leftover beef trimmings and a customer came in and said he wanted something he could eat on the run and that could be cooked right away. Louis grabbed his ground beef, cooked it and served between two pieces of bread.

Making meringues
Meringues are light, airy desserts that seem to melt right in your mouth. They can be eaten just as they are, filled or served with whipped cream, ice cream, fruit and many other sweet garnishes. They are first mentioned in a cookbook published in 1692 and were first called meringues when the cookbook was translated into English a few years later. Since then, they have been made pretty much the same.
