Jazz on the Rocks -- Take 3

Chris Botti concert tops Shalin Liu benefit gala Nov. 3

The night after playing the MGM Las Vegas with Barbra Streisand, Chris Botti will take the stage in Rockport for Jazz on the Rocks Take 3 gala benefit on Nov. 3.

Since the opening of Rockport Music’s oceanfront performance center three years ago, the Jazz on the Rocks gala has been a major benefit for the organization’s programming and educational outreach, which includes some free concerts and other events, in addition to its year-round concerts and films.

A Grammy-nominated trumpeter, Botti is the third performer in this annual event, following Dave Brubeck and Ahmad Jamal in previous years.

“It’s a different style of jazz and we wanted to broaden the interest. The music of Chris Botti goes beyond jazz aficionados,” said Tony Beadle, the Rockport Music executive director, “He’s very versatile -- a great musician.”

Botti has played extensively with Paul Simon, and had an especially creative association with Sting.

He has sold more than three million albums. His latest album release with Sony is titled “Impressions.” He has established himself as a major figure not just in jazz, but also in the contemporary music world.

Botti also has shared the stage with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Andrea Bocelli and Herbie Hancock, in addition to the fall tour with Streisand.

In addition to the evening concert, the gala includes a reception and a live auction. There is also an online auction that is open to anyone.

“We have more than doubled the items on the online auction,” said Beadle.

Jazz on the Rocks Take 3 begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception and an exclusive live auction with items like a special weekend stay in the 1861 lighthouse keeper’s house on Thacher Island.

As part of the activities, people can also participate in the online auction at www.biddingforgood.com/RockportMusic with bidding that began this week.

The Chris Botti concert will begin at 8 p.m. The concert-only tickets are currently sold out, but tickets for the full evening of reception, auction, and concert are still available at $300 each.
