Strike up the band

ESSEX — Town resident and writer Daisy Nell has a new book coming out in about a month or so, titled “Captain Stan’s Foo Foo Band,” and it will have an accompanying CD that will teach contra dance and folk dancing steps and folk songs that dovetail closely with the book.

Last week, the video to accompany the book was filmed at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum by Essex resident and videographer Barry O’Brien. Nell, dancers and musicians were performing, singing and dancing a variety of folk dances in the quaint barn-like building, complete with curly wood shavings on the floor.

Nell and her husband, Stan Colliston, have also been teaching the dance steps and songs to second-graders at Essex Elementary School.

George Ulrich, the book’s illustrator, also was on hand, performing banjo with the band.
