Rockport Garden Club hosts annual tour

The popular Rockport Garden Club tour of local gardens takes place Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.

This year's "Coastal Gardens" tour will feature 13 gardens, many of them gardens that have never been open to the public.

The gardens vary in size, location, composition and plant material, although there is a common thread: each garden has had significant owner input. The tour features include several water gardens; cottage gardens bursting with color from early spring through late autumn; and dramatic use of local granite.

Several gardens integrate vegetable gardens with colorful flowers and shrubs. Some gardens were created in a challenging hillside location, and others border the sea.

An expansive garden near the ocean will host the special events, which include a luncheon and a sale of original artwork and note cards by local artists.

Tickets are $25. Proceeds from the garden tour help to pay for the planting and maintenance of Rockport's 12 town gardens, and fund various civic projects and scholarships.

Tickets are on sale at Toad Hall Bookstore at 51 Main St. in Rockport, or call 978-546-2896, 978-546-1638 or 978-546-6861 or online at gardentour@rockportgardenclub.org.

Today, Friday and Saturday, tickets will be sold from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce Information Booth at Upper Main Street and at Barletta Park on the corner of Broadway near T-Wharf.
