Duo brings gypsy music, American jazz to chapel

---- — MANCHESTER — A musical duo will bring a fusion of American jazz and European gypsy music to the historical surroundings of the Crowell Chapel in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The classically trained Antonevich and Katz Duo will perform a lively program featuring favorites arranged for violin and piano in the European gypsy-jazz style. This style of music originated in Europe in the 1930s, propelled by stars such as Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli, noted Axel Magnuson, an organizer.

Stanislav Antonevich, a virtuoso violinist, and Leo Loginov Katz, an improvisational jazz pianist, are professional musicians of Eastern European origin, with unusual backgrounds and complementary talents.

Antonevich, who has a master’s degree in jazz from the Longy School of Music, is known for his passionate delivery.

Katz is known for his spontaneous compositions on themes requested by the audience, and he plans to repeat this feat as a special feature of this concert, Magnuson said.

Their last four shows in Massachusetts, held in Brighton, Brookline and Somerville, all sold out.

Gypsy jazz, also known as gypsy swing or hot club jazz, will be well suited for the naturally vibrant acoustics and classic interior of the 1903 Crowell Chapel, Magnuson said.

After the concert, the audience can meet the musicians at a post-concert reception at The Landing at 7 Central St. in Manchester.

The mission of the Crowell Chapel concert series, sponsored by the nonprofit Historic Manchester Trust, is, in part, to help fund the long-term preservation of recently restored historic structures such as Crowell Chapel and Tuck’s Point. The 2013 program season runs through December. For more information or to become a patron, contact Woody Kelly at 617-755-9299 or cwoodkelly@gmail.com.

Tickets for the Sept. 21 concert at 7:30 p.m. are $20, and $15 for students and children. Tickets are available through www.thecrowellchapel.com, the Crowell Chapel Facebook page, and locally at Nor’East Frameworks, North Coast Too! and through Woody Kelly.
