Volunteers needed for Coastsweep cleanups

Volunteers are needed for Coastsweep cleanups this weekend and during October on Cape Ann.

Each September and October, thousands of volunteers collect literally tons of trash from beaches, marshes, riverbanks and the seafloor in Massachusetts.

The participants join thousands of other volunteers in the world’s largest volunteer effort for the ocean — the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup — collecting trash, fishing line and other marine debris and recording data on what is found. This data is used to find solutions for keeping trash out of the ocean.

Since 1987, volunteers throughout Massachusetts have turned out for the annual cleanup.

Cape Ann cleanups are planned:

In Rockport, at Cape Hedge and Long beaches on Saturday, Sept. 28. To volunteer for the Rockport cleanup, contact Sarah Visnick ( The group will meet in the Long Beach parking lot, off of Seaview Street in Rockport at 9 a.m. and collect trash until 11 a.m. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m.

Collection supplies will be provided; however, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own garden gloves to reduce waste. Last year, the group organized a successful cleanup at Front and Back beaches in Rockport with help from a dozen high school students as well as members of the Rockport Conservation Commission.

In Manchester, at Black and White Beach on Saturday, Oct. 5. The effort will be led by Eric Magers and the Manchester Essex Green Team. To volunteer, contact or call 978-525-6469.

In Gloucester, at Plum Cove Beach on Thursday, Oct. 10. Interested volunteers should contact Patti Amaral of the Clean City Initiative at or 978-281-6708.

In Gloucester, at Long Beach on Saturday, Oct. 19. O’Maley Innovation Middle School students, led by Paula Gray, invite volunteers to join them at the Gloucester end of the beach. For specifics, contact Gray at or 978-281-8691.
