Sharing a passion for bagpipes

Musician visits Gloucester and Manchester schools

The bagpipes were wailing at local schools this week.

As an outreach program of Rockport Music, Elliot Smith of Concord, N.H., brought his bagpipe Monday to Cape Ann. He performed at East Gloucester Elementary School, where his appearance was sponsored by the school’s PTO.

He then traveled to Manchester Essex Regional Middle School in Manchester. Smith, a well-known bagpipe player who tours internationally, gave a performance and explained the history and inner workings of his instrument.

He warned the seventh-graders that the instrument was very loud indoors and assured them he wouldn’t be offended if they covered their ears.
