Jan Walker and Jim Looney are two of a kind; people fascinated by nature, drawn to watch wildlife going about its daily business. In addition, both are photographers with eyes for detail, and both are members of the Rocky Neck Gallery where they are collaborating this week on a show of nature photographs.
In planning the show, they also discovered a shared love for many of the same kinds of animals and natural locations.
"At that point," said Walker, "it seemed right to go with pairs of photos on the same topics and everything came together fast." With topics like "marine mammal" and "insect," they had plenty of room for creative choices from their vast collections of photos.
Looney, a Gloucester native, has travelled widely throughout the United States on a photo journey, spending extensive time on the Gulf Coast of Florida watching and photographing shore birds.
Walker has taken pictures since the age of 8, while also exploring art through other media, such as watercolor painting and hand-built ceramics. Travelling with her husband gave her the opportunity to photograph some wonderful locations; California and the Galapagos are represented in this show.
The show, titled "One World, Two Visions," runs through Aug. 4 at the Rocky Neck Gallery at 53 Rocky Neck Ave. in Gloucester. Call 978-282-0917 for directions. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The artists invite everyone who loves "critters" to join them at the gallery for refreshments and conversations about nature on Monday, Aug. 2, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Nature-loving children are particularly welcome.
