Hospice benefit built on Beatles music

---- — The music of the Beatles and the solo works of the late John Lennon and George Harrison, will all be served up in a benefit concert for the services of Hospice North Shore Saturday at the Elks at Bass Rocks in Gloucester.

The show will feature New England’s Beatles tribute band Octopus’s Garden, which will perform classic Beatle songs and The Mockers, which performs works by Lennon and Harrison.

The event is being organized by Joseph Militello, a member of both bands, who noted that all proceeds go to North Shore Hospice. He also said it is an all ages show. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Militello said he likes to present these kinds of benefits to thank the organization that helped his late father, Sam Militello, who died of lung cancer 18 years ago. His father was a local fisherman and chairman of the St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee for nearly three decades.

Joseph Militello, a founding member and lead singer of The Mockers, said the band was formed about eight years ago. It has performed throughout New England and in many south shore venues as well as New Jersey.

In addition to Militello, the band is composed of Fred Grady, Colleen Van Horn, John Van Horn, Eric Adamson of “The Fools” and Stacey Pedrick also of “The Fools,” and John Ionitto with special guest Dakota O’Driscoll.

“We all grew up with the Beatles, and that music transcends all different generations these days, and you can get old and young crowds enthusiastic about the music,” said Militello, a vice president at J.Barrett Realtors in Manchester. He has been a real estate agent for 27 years and performing for 30 years, including the annual Sarah Lufkin benefit in Essex. In the 1980s, Militello used to play North Shore venues with the band Cold Shoulder, which used to get local air play.

“We hope everyone will come out, and it’s certainly for a great cause,” he said. “I’m hoping to make this the first of an annual event.”
