---- — Tom Rash of Rockport will perform in Boston Children’s Theatre production of “Honk!” that opens in just over a week.
Rash plays the role of the sarcastic father duck Drake in the comical family musical that runs Feb. 9 to 24 at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts. The show is directed and choreographed by Larry Sousa, a nationally recognized director and choreographer of the upcoming Broadway musical “Merry Go Round,” featuring Florence Henderson in her return to Broadway.
Rash, a Rockport High graduate of 2008, recently graduated from The Hartt School, the performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford in Connecticut.
“It is an absolute pleasure to work with Larry Sousa,” said Rash. Sousa is also on faculty at the Boston Conservatory, an award-winning choreographer.
Rash has his own credits as an actor. He performed in Marblehead Little Theatre’s production of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” as well as “A Christmas Carol” at Hartford Stage, and Theatre in the Pines’ production of “Taming of the Shrew.” At The Hartt School, he appeared in numerous productions, including “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” “Hamlet,” “Tartuffe,” and “Henry V.”
When Rash finishes this show, he will be busy auditioning for his next one.
“Honk!,” written by George Stiles and Anthony Drew, is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of “The Ugly Duckling.” The work received the Olivier Award, the British equivalent of a Tony Award.
The musical tells the story of a young bird named Ugly whose unusual and awkward appearance triggers prejudice and ridicule among his family and friends. But on his journey in life, he not only meets some interesting characters, he discovers his true inner beauty and finds love and acceptance along the way.
This is the 61st season for the Boston Children’s Theatre, which was named Best of Boston 2012 by Boston Magazine for Best Children’s Theatre.
